Karl Morgan: Book Doctor-Book Reviewer-Line Editor

Book doctor. Line editor. Script Analysis.

Writing is a solitary task by nature. The obvious pitfall of such an exercise is that it falls prey to subjectivity. My job as a book editor is to read my authors' material with a fresh set of objective, highly trained eyes—all with the goal of enhancing the writing to its fullest, bringing out what’s best about it.

Every serious writer relies on a conscientious editor for guidance and feedback. In fact, precise and intuitively performed editing can be as vital to a compelling manuscript as the writing itself. Worthwhile manuscripts are rejected left and right because of their narrative and stylistic shortcomings. For professional novelists and amateur writers alike, enlisting the meticulous expertise of a qualified editor can mean the difference between publication and another rejection slip.

The best results come when the writer and editor bring their minds together and commit to working toward a mutually agreed upon vision for the manuscript. Each person contributes something vital and unique to the process, making the relationship absolutely critical in the formation of a worthwhile and promising product. The key to good editing is to refine the flow of the text and instill in it—through revision and critique—the substantive fingerprints that publishers look for while retaining the author's voice and narrative intention. I work from the core belief that every book that hits the market must have earned a place there, and this can only come about when premeditated and well considered writing and editing go into the mix.
